This iconic building, situated in the city center, was designed by the renowned East German architect Hermann Henselmann. Originally built as a research facility for the Jena-based Carl Zeiss company, it features a cylindrical architectural style modeled after the shape of an eyepiece, and is entirely sky blue in color. Constructed between 1969 and 1972, the tower stands 128 meters tall with a diameter of 33 meters. It was later used by the University of Jena, and in 1999, the building was sold to an investor. In 2001, it underwent a comprehensive renovation, which included the addition of two extra floors and a universal mobile telecommunications system antenna.
After renovation, Jen Tower reached a height of 159 meters. Its ground floor also houses a shopping center, while the 28th and 29th floors were transformed into restaurants where visitors can enjoy meals while taking in panoramic views of the city, including the tower itself, the square, and the majestic Jena limestone slopes.
