Since 1965, the museum has displayed one of the largest eyeglass collections in Europe, along with a collection gallery and a globally unique exhibition on astronomical technology. Since the mid-19th century, Jena has gradually developed into an optical industry hub. The museum showcases optical instruments from eight centuries, offering a technical and cultural-historical exploration of their development. It also highlights the life’s work and significant contributions to the field of optics by German physicist, optician, and entrepreneur Ernst Karl Abbe and optical instrument entrepreneur Carl Zeiss.
The building housing the Optical Museum has three floors with a total exhibition area of 1,200 square meters. The museum narrates the 500-year development history of optical instruments such as eyeglasses, telescopes, microscopes, and cameras. Visitors can test their vision or immerse themselves in holograms and striking three-dimensional displays. In addition, the museum frequently hosts temporary exhibitions on non-optical themes in collaboration with the Jena Art Club.
