Serra da Capivara National Park

  Introduction

Natural and human factors have led to the deterioration of prehistoric Stone Age rock paintings, some of which are on the verge of destruction. These paintings are found across 360 archaeological sites within Serra da Capivara National Park. An increasing number of insects have made nests on these walls. A layer of limestone generated by climatic factors has covered the paintings. The staff responsible for protecting these archaeological sites is the smallest in the park. Moreover, hunters have been starting bonfires here, especially at night. To save these paintings, three projects must be launched simultaneously, including creating a computerized catalog of the rock paintings, preserving and maintaining them, and educating the local community about the importance of safeguarding this cultural heritage. Humans have continuously inhabited this area for 55,000 years. These narrative wall paintings are of great preservation value as they depict daily life scenes and ancient ceremonial moments of the people at that time. Serra da Capivara National Park has now been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

In 1996, efforts began on multiple fronts to protect the Stone Age rock paintings within Serra da Capivara National Park. The Brazilian Development Bank supported the construction of internal roads in the park, which will facilitate the management of these sites. Experts from the International Council of Museums specializing in rock painting preservation and specialists from Kyoto University in Japan visited the park and recommended enhanced management and protection of the park’s paintings. These recommendations directly led to the use of specialized computer technology and audiovisual equipment to record the rock paintings. Cultural preservation and ecological conservation courses were also provided to local residents, aiming to involve them in the protection of the national park and prevent damage.
