Historic Centre of the Town of Goiás

  Introduction

The urban layout and architecture of the town of Goiás are exemplary of European towns adapted to the unique climate, geography, and cultural context of central South America. The town reflects the development process of colonial urban structures and architectural characteristics in South America, making full use of local building materials and techniques while preserving its distinctive cultural heritage.

The town of Goiás stands as evidence of the colonization of Brazil’s central inland region during the 18th and 19th centuries. Its urban planning, well-suited to the local natural conditions, serves as a fine example of the organic development of a mining town. Though modest in size, the town’s public buildings and private residences form a harmonious and unified whole thanks to the rational use of local construction materials and traditional building methods.
Located about 144 kilometers northwest of Goiás is the renowned historic town of Goiás Velho, originally known as Vila Boa, though now commonly referred to simply as Goiás. Once a vibrant commercial and political hub, it has since lost its former glory and become a celebrated tourist destination.

Goiás developed as a gold mining settlement around 1726 and remained the state capital until 1937. Here, cobblestone streets and numerous 18th- and 19th-century buildings evoke a strong colonial atmosphere. In 1950, the town of Goiás was designated as a protected area. It boasts some particularly outstanding churches and houses. The Palácio dos Barbosa, built in 1755, houses colonial-era antique furniture and a charming Portuguese-style garden, and is currently open to the public. The Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário in the district of Ramos, also known as the Church of Bandeira de Menezes, still echoes tales from the gold rush era.
