Stone Carvings at West-Watching Mountain

     The stone carvings at West-Watching Mountain are located at various scenic spots on West-Watching Mountain, about 1.6 kilometers west of the county seat. These carvings were created during the Ming and Qing dynasties and the Republic of China period, featuring exquisite calligraphy. However, due to the passage of time, many treasured inscriptions have been lost to weathering or destruction. More than 20 sites have been discovered, with 18 measured so far. Most are inscribed with the names of scenic spots. The main ones include: “West-Watching Mountain,” located on the cliff below the Twin Gates, 9 meters above the ground, carved in relief, regular script, vertical arrangement, each character about 0.5 meters square, inscribed by Gui Shicheng during the Republic of China period; “Heavenly Pillar Peak,” located on the western stone pillar of the Twin Gates, about 50 meters above the ground, horizontal arrangement, carved in relief, regular script, each character about 0.4 meters square, inscribed by Gui Shicheng during the Republic of China period; “Heavenly Wind Ridge,” located on a huge rock atop the mountain, about 2 meters above the ground, horizontal arrangement, running script, carved in relief, each character 0.5 meters square, inscribed by Ren Kecheng during the Republic of China period; “Emerald Maiden Summit,” located to the right of Heavenly Wind Ridge, about 2 meters above the ground, horizontal arrangement, running script, carved in relief, each character 0.46 meters square, inscribed by Gui Shicheng during the Republic of China period; “Ten Thousand Valleys Echo with Pine,” located about 200 meters south of Phoenix Pool, halfway up the mountain, about 2 meters above the ground, horizontal arrangement, regular script, carved in relief, each character 0.4 meters square, inscribed by Mao Guangxiang during the Republic of China period; “Phoenix Pool,” located by Phoenix Pool to the south of Fengchi Temple, inscribed by Xu Duguang during the Republic of China period; “Stone Tower Pass,” located on a rock 500 meters south of the Dragon Ridge, 7 meters above the ground, horizontal arrangement, regular script, carved in relief, each character 0.35 meters square, the name of the calligrapher has been eroded and is no longer clear. Other intact carvings include “Heaven’s Gate Rock” by Mou Hanping, “Cloud Ladder” by Wang Zuo, “Rising in the Southern Sky” by Deng Kuangyuan, and “Ten Thousand Fir Ridge” by Wu Nanqiu.
