It is a sandbank formed by the convergence of sediment from the Yangtze River carried by the south-to-north advancing waves of the East China Sea and sediment from the Yellow River carried by the north-to-south rotating currents of the nearby Huanghai Sea, which deposit on the sea surface outside Dafeng and Dongtai. It is the largest "ebb-and-flow island" in China.
Due to its unique geographical location, Dongsha boasts a rich marine ecosystem, making it an ideal breeding ground for fish, shellfish, and other marine life. It is hailed as a “natural pasture” of the sea. The island produces various fish, shellfish, and seabirds. Visitors can collect shells, surf, sail, fish, and have beach barbecues here — it's a great destination for coastal exploration and fun.
