The exterior of Auckland Art Gallery is an eye-catching white building that gives off a highly artistic vibe, while its interior boasts vast space. When it was first established, the gallery's collection mainly focused on artworks from the late 19th century. Today, the collection has expanded comprehensively in both time span and style, with over 15,000 pieces on display. The gallery is a paradise for visual arts in New Zealand, featuring works ranging from 1376 to the modern day. These include New Zealand historical art, modern art, contemporary art, as well as artworks by Māori and Pacific Island artists. The collection also includes paintings by renowned artists such as Dalí, Derain, Matisse, and Mondrian. Major types of works include paintings, sculptures, and wood carvings. Among these numerous collections, the most famous is Picasso’s “Family of Saltimbanques,” a collective portrait he created for his family in 1951. This masterpiece is one of Picasso’s representative works and is considered the “crown jewel” of Auckland Art Gallery.
Auckland Art Gallery has made significant contributions in the field of education, expanding its teaching areas to facilitate student visits and learning. In addition, spaces for family interaction have also been enlarged. The gallery also features a café and a gift shop for visitors to relax and shop.
