Washington Square
Highlights The most prominent feature in the square is the marble arch, originally built in 1889 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of George Washington’s presidential inauguration. It was replaced in 1892 by the current marble arch designed by Stanford White. A hidden staircase on the right side of the arch allows visitors to climb up. Additionally, there are statues of Washington on both sides of the arch: the one on the right depicts Washington in peacetime, while the one on the left shows him in wartime. These were added in 1918 and 1916, respectively. Introduction Washington Square is located between Greenwich Village and the East Village, surrounded by the bohemian freedom and vibrancy that defines New York City. Since the square's establishment, the West Village has been a haven for writers and artists. The East Village, slightly more edgy, is home to punks and experimental theater. Within a one-kilometer radius of Washington Square, you’ll find numerous cafes, bookstores, bars, and some lesser-known jazz clubs.
