Kamadang Monastery

Kamadang Monastery is situated on a mountainside about 2.5 kilometers east of Sangri County in Shannan. It was initially constructed in the 11th century as a monastery of the Kadampa sect. In the mid-to-late 11th century, it converted to the Shije (also known as Mozhi) sect, and around the 17th century, it became a Gelugpa monastery, although it retained certain rituals of the Shije sect.

The monastery was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution and rebuilt in 1986. Its main statue is that of Mozhi Luojizhuoma. Mozhi Luojizhuoma was a unique female figure in Tibetan Buddhist history who founded her own distinct sect. Based on Shije teachings and incorporating elements from the Kadampa sect, she established the Mozhi sect, which distinguished itself from other schools through the use of ritual drum chanting during teachings. At that time, the Mozhi sect spread widely across Tibet. Given the historical marginalization of women in Buddhism, this development undoubtedly played a positive role in advancing the status of women.
