Located 11 kilometers along the eastern highway of the Bawangling Forestry Bureau, there is the world’s most toxic ancient tree by the roadside. It stands over 32 meters tall, with a crown diameter exceeding 20 meters and a trunk diameter of about 80 centimeters. The tree is over 200 years old. This tree possesses the most extraordinary highly toxic milky sap. When its bark or branches are broken, a milky-white, highly poisonous sap oozes out. Ingestion by humans or animals can lead to cardiac paralysis and fatal poisoning; if it gets into the eyes, it can cause blindness. Humans or animals injured by weapons coated with this toxic sap will die instantly, hence the name “upas tree” (meaning “touch and die”).
