The museum's exhibits are diverse and can be divided into three main categories: archaeological collections, ethnographic collections, and fine art crafts. The archaeological collection includes artifacts from the Stone Age to more recent periods, featuring permanent displays such as chief’s regalia, traditional Ghanaian musical instruments, glass beads, textiles, stools, and ceramics. Additionally, there are objects exchanged with other African countries, such as masks from South Africa and Zulu wood carvings.
The National Museum of Ghana also houses a selection of modern Ghanaian paintings, including oil paintings, pastel works, acrylics, watercolors, and abstract collages. The museum currently preserves historical and cultural exhibits related to Ghanaian tribal chieftaincy culture, the history of the slave trade, ethnic handicrafts, and African musical instruments. It underwent renovation in 2007 in preparation for Ghana’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
