The eastern old town features narrow streets and many traditional Arab residences, while the northwest houses ancient Roman-era fortresses, palaces, and mosques. Constantine boasts a university, an Islamic school, and numerous ancient Roman and medieval landmarks, including stone walls surrounding the city, the Cirta National Museum, the municipal library, mosques, the old city, the university, the royal palace, ancient Roman aqueducts, and a statue of Emperor Constantine I. The tomb of Algeria’s national hero Abd el-Kader is also located in Constantine.
