Feng Xuefeng’s Former Residence
Feng Xuefeng’s Former Residence, located in Shentan Village, Chian Town, Yiwu City. The residence was built in 1909 (the first year of the Xuantong reign of the Qing Dynasty), facing southwest from the east, and is a two-courtyard, five-bay, two-story brick-and-wood quadrangle structure covering a total area of 255 square meters. In front of the main gate, there is a cedar tree planted on each side, and on the right stands a rectangular bluestone tablet inscribed with the words “In Memory of Xuefeng,” calligraphed by [name omitted], while a black marble plaque engraved with “Feng Xuefeng’s Former Residence,” calligraphed by Ding Ling, is embedded in the wall beside the gate. Upon entering the gate, a courtyard features a half-length bronze statue of Feng Xuefeng, with two wing rooms on each side. The central bay of the entrance hall has a raised-beam structure, while the other bays feature a through-tenon structure. The second floor served as living quarters, with lattice windows along the front eaves. The rear section consists of a main hall with a through-tenon structure, where the central bay was used for receiving guests and the side bays served as the master’s bedroom. The first floor of the residence displays photographs and physical materials such as publications reflecting various periods of Feng Xuefeng’s life. The side rooms of the entrance hall also exhibit farming and daily-life tools such as plows, harrows, windmills, spinning wheels, and stone mills. The second floor showcases elegiac couplets, calligraphy, and paintings in his memory from comrades, colleagues, and figures in the literary and art circles. Behind the residence, a flower-lined path leads to Feng Xuefeng’s cemetery, which was built in 2003 when his ashes were relocated from Babaoshan in Beijing to Shentan Village by the local government. The tombstone was inscribed by [name omitted], then Premier of the State Council. Feng Xuefeng’s Former Residence is a key cultural relic protection unit of Zhejiang Province and a patriotic education base in Yiwu City.
