Wuzhishan Li Ethnic Village

Introduction: Wuzhishan Li Ethnic Village is situated in the suburbs of Tuncheng City, just a 2-kilometer walk along the northern bank of the Nansheng River. The area boasts verdant surrounding mountains and expansive fields, presenting a picturesque rural landscape. It is a natural village where the Li ethnic group resides. Originally a village under the "He Mu" system, it still retains large areas of traditional boat-shaped thatched houses. It is said that the ancestors of the Li people originally lived in Shanghai, using boats as their homes, and later moved to the land. To commemorate their seafaring ancestors, they built boat-shaped houses on land. Men in the village grow long hair tied in a topknot at the forehead, wrap their heads with red or black cloth, and wear collarless, front-opening tops. The women have facial tattoos, wear tube skirts embroidered with patterns, and don flower-embroidered headscarves. Their tops have no buttons and are front-opening. They enjoy wearing ornaments such as earrings, necklaces, and bracelets. The women in the village are skilled in weaving and embroidery, using simple tools and their dexterous hands to create exquisite Li brocade handicrafts such as patterned headscarves, tops, and pomegranate-patterned tube skirts. The villagers are also talented singers and dancers. Their mountain song duets feature beautiful, lyrical melodies; traditional dances such as the "Pichai Dance," "Rice-Pounding Dance," and "Money-Bell and Double-Saber Dance" are vibrant and colorful; and the unique nose flute and bronze flute performances carry distinctive ethnic styles and a rich sense of daily life. After the liberation, changes gradually occurred in clothing customs—the women only wear traditional ethnic attire during festivals or when receiving tourists and no longer practice facial tattooing. Almost all residents now live in tiled houses, and both men and women attend school, making this one of the more progressive areas among the Li ethnic regions. The tourist village is run by the Li people themselves and now features bamboo houses and other structures with Li ethnic characteristics. It displays a variety of traditional Li labor tools, household items, and recreational equipment. Visitors can also watch Li dance performances and purchase uniquely characteristic ethnic handicrafts. The village offers a rich cultural experience and is well worth a visit.
