Roosevelt Memorial
Highlights
The stone wall, built from over 30,000 granite blocks weighing a total of more than 6,000 tons, and the life-size, lifelike bronze statues are the main features of this park-like design. The entire Roosevelt Memorial is divided into four sections by stone walls, representing the four terms of Roosevelt’s presidency: The first stone chamber features a bas-relief depicting Roosevelt’s inauguration. The stone wall also bears various handprints and faces, each corresponding to carvings on the central stone pillar in the room, conveying the fear and helplessness of people during the Great Depression; The second stone chamber continues the theme of the “Roosevelt New Deal” and the establishment of the social welfare system from the first chamber, and also houses masterpieces by renowned sculptors George Segal and Robert Graham; The third stone chamber centers on a life-size seated statue of the President, with Roosevelt wearing a cloak and showing a resolute expression; The fourth stone chamber focuses on Eleanor Roosevelt, the President’s most important partner.
