National Zoo
Introduction
The National Zoo was established in 1889 and is home to approximately 500 species and 2,700 animals, including cheetahs, zebras, camels, elephants, deer, Tibetan antelopes, brown pelicans, kangaroos, hippos, rhinos, giraffes, gorillas, and, of course, lions, tigers, and bears, among many others. In addition, the National Zoo has giant pandas.
The animals live in large, open enclosures that simulate their natural habitats. At the Kids’ Farm within the zoo, children can get up close to domesticated animals, with ducks, chickens, sheep, cows, donkeys, and more roaming freely.
