In the 4th year of the Republic of China (1915), he was admitted to Peiyang University in Tianjin before graduating from middle school. In the 7th year of the Republic of China, he returned to Changzhou and married Lu Jinghua, living in the back wing of the single-story house at No. 3 Hezi Lane. The house faces south and consists of two courtyards and two rows of single-story buildings. The residence covers an area of 538 square meters, with a construction area of 431.6 square meters. In 1987, with the approval of the CPC Central Committee, it was restored to its original appearance and officially opened to the public on December 12, the 60th anniversary of the Guangzhou Uprising and the heroic sacrifice of martyr Zhang Tailei. The restored former residence is divided into two parts: the original layout of the residence and an exhibition on Zhang Tailei’s life and achievements. The red plaque with golden characters reading “Former Residence of Comrade Zhang Tailei” at the entrance was inscribed by Deng Xiaoping. Upon entering, there are offices and a reception room on both sides. Passing through a hallway, there is a small courtyard where a 1.05-meter-tall white marble bust of Zhang Tailei stands on a black marble base. The middle room of the back wing serves as the living room, the west wing room was Zhang Tailei’s bedroom, and the east wing room was his mother’s bedroom, displaying household items used during his lifetime. Passing through a moon gate to the east leads to the exhibition rooms, which consist of two sections separated by a small courtyard. The life and achievements are presented in six parts: Youth, One of the Founders of the Communist Party of China, Devotion to the International Communist Movement, Facilitating the First KMT-CPC Cooperation, At the Critical Juncture of the Great Revolution, and Leading the Guangzhou Uprising. The exhibition displays over 500 items related to Zhang Tailei, including books, manuscripts, and photographs, along with over 100 contemporary calligraphy and painting works donated by notable figures. In March 1982, the former residence of Zhang Tailei was designated as a provincial-level cultural relics protection unit.
