Essaouira is a classic North African fortified port city that developed in the late 18th century. Many of its buildings were constructed following the design of contemporary European defensive fortresses. Since its establishment, Essaouira has served as an important international trade seaport, linking Morocco and the Sahara inland regions with Europe and other parts of the world. The port is one of the most vibrant and bustling areas of the city, with its ancient docks teeming with activity and blue fishing boats coming and going. Every morning, the harbor hosts a lively fish market, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into daily life in Essaouira. To this day, the port still houses several bronze cannons brought over from Spain in the 17th and 18th centuries.
