Zhongshan Street

Prefectural Government Front Street, also called "South Main Street" after liberation and "Zhongshan Street" during the Republican era, was constructed in the 18th year of the Daoguang reign (1838) under the supervision of Magistrate Long Guangdian. The district covers a total area of 16,000 square meters, with the street stretching 690 meters in length and 3.5 meters in width. The central one-meter section of the street is paved with bluestone slabs, and the residential buildings in the area feature fireproof walls, exemplifying typical Qing Dynasty architectural style. A 200-meter section of the street still retains its original appearance, with ancient structures remaining intact. In October 1983, it was designated as a provincial-level cultural heritage site by the provincial government.
Over the past twenty years, at least one film or TV drama has been shot here almost every year, such as *The Sound of the Wind Blowing Through the Reed Flute*, *Ren Bishi*, *Lei Feng*, *Our Troops March Towards the Sun*, *In Our Time*, and more. Notably, all the scenes of the ancient city in *In Our Time* were filmed in Qianyang Ancient Town. The old Changsha alleys where the young Mao Zedong is seen strolling, running, and moving about in the drama are actually Prefectural Government Front Street. This series won the Special Prize of the National “Five-One Project.”
