The national park features alpine climate and alpine flora, which are quite rare in Australia. Its cold climate once recorded Australia’s lowest temperature in 1994. Many rare or endangered plants and animals thrive here, including the highly threatened Corroboree Frog. The park boasts numerous lakes, cascading waterfalls, winding rivers, and unique caves, making it an ideal spot for swimming, fishing, canoeing, waterfall viewing, and cave exploration. With mountain ranges covered in snow for at least four months each year, it has become a renowned ski destination in Australia. The famous Alpine Walking Track runs through the park, attracting thousands of hikers in summer who climb Mount Kosciuszko via this trail.
Within Kosciuszko National Park, picnicking is allowed almost anywhere except on roads and waterways, but open fires are not permitted in high-altitude areas.
