The MacDonnell Ranges stretch 644 kilometers, with Mount Zeil being the highest peak at an elevation of 1,531 meters. The ranges are the source of the Todd River, Finke River, and Sandover River. They can be divided into eastern and western sections. In the West MacDonnell Ranges, you can see rock wallabies hopping along the ridges of Simpsons Gap, admire the ever-changing red cliffs of Standley Chasm under the midday sun, and explore the creeks deep within the gorges. In the East MacDonnell Ranges, activities include bushwalking, camping, four-wheel-drive adventures, visiting the ghost town of Arltunga left over from the gold rush era, and taking in the natural beauty of Trephina Gorge.
Albert Namatjira, one of Australia’s most renowned Aboriginal artists, lived in the MacDonnell Ranges region, and his paintings often feature the majestic MacDonnell Ranges.
