The observatory was established to protect the migratory waterbirds in the region and to facilitate scientific research. This area is home to 40% of Australia’s bird species, and you may spot some of them while hiking through beaches, mangroves, mudflats, tropical woodlands, and grasslands. The best time for birdwatching is from September to April each year, when hundreds of thousands of migratory birds from Siberia come here to overwinter. Around 300 different species, totaling more than 150,000 birds, gather here, displaying a spectacular array of colors and behaviors in perfect harmony. Some soar through the sky, some forage in the water, some sing from the treetops, and others play together, creating a truly harmonious scene.
These playful birds occasionally put on concerts. Their loud chorus isn’t chaotic at all—instead, it’s clear, resonant, and melodious, leaving a lasting impression.
