Every spring, summer, and autumn, thousands of egrets appear along the waterways in Zhongchi Township. These egrets inhabit the area, feeding and breeding here. At dawn, as the egrets fly out in search of food, they form beautiful patterns in the sky — sometimes a “V” shape, other times a straight line — creating a stunning view reminiscent of “a line of egrets flying into the blue sky.”
Egrets are a Class II nationally protected species. They have slender bodies, yellow toes, pure white feathers, and yellowish-green bare skin on their faces. They prefer to forage for small fish and crustaceans in shallow water in rice fields, riverbanks, sandy beaches, and mudflats.
