Nan'ao Fishing Port

There are three fishing ports in Nan'ao: the First Fishing Port, also known as "Nan'ao Fishing Port," was built during the Japanese colonial period and is the earliest fishing port in Nan'ao. The Nantian Temple across from the fishing port serves as the local religious center, while the lower end of Nan'ao Fishing Port is lined with many stir-fry eateries and seafood shops, allowing visitors to enjoy freshly caught seafood.

The Second Fishing Port, also known as "Neipi Fishing Port," was constructed in the 44th year of the Republic of China (1955) and is the smallest of the three. Every day between 3 PM and 5 PM, fish vendors from all over gather in the market to hawk their wares, and visitors can join in to purchase fresh seafood at low prices.

The Third Fishing Port, built in the 54th year of the Republic of China (1965), is comparatively quieter than the first two fishing markets. Located along the Third Fishing Port is the Third Fishing Market, which now primarily accommodates large seine-net fishing boats and deep-sea fishing vessels. In addition to its thriving fishing industry, the coral processing trade was once highly prosperous in this small fishing port before declining due to overharvesting. However, the roadside near the port still houses several jewelry and coral shops, offering a dazzling array of treasures for visitors to choose from.

  Nan'ao Cross-Harbor Bridge

Nan'ao Fishing Port is a vital hub for the development of Nan'ao. The urban area of Nan'ao surrounds the docks. In the past, traveling from the north shore to the south shore required going around a long way, but since the completion of the circular cross-sea bridge in 1998 — the first single-box girder suspension steel bridge in Asia — with its white structure and sleek design spanning the fishing port channel, Nan'ao has taken on a circular layout. Vehicles can now drive directly around the city area, greatly enhancing convenience for residents and tourists. The cross-sea bridge has also become a tourist attraction and a source of pride for locals.

  Nantian Temple Mazu Shrine

Nan'ao is a natural fishing harbor, and most residents make their living from fishing. In 1946, the residents, feeling grateful for Mazu’s miraculous salvation, began preparations in the winter of 1950 to build the Nantian Temple Mazu Shrine, completing the main hall in 1952 and the entire temple in November 18, 1956 (the 45th year of the Republic of China).

In 1990 (the 79th year of the Republic of China), over 20 master craftsmen were invited to create the world’s largest solid gold Mazu statue (crafted entirely from pure gold and weighing 200 kilograms). It was enshrined at 11:00 PM on September 10, 1995 (the 84th year of the Republic of China), attracting numerous worshippers and making it a popular site of devotion with flourishing incense offerings.
