Legend has it that long ago, the site of the Cilan Forest Recreation Area was home to a pair of young Atayal lovers. One day, while the young man was out hunting, he was accidentally shot and killed by an arrow from a fellow hunter. When the young woman heard the news, she rushed to his side, embraced his lifeless body, and wept bitterly—so heartbroken that she too fainted and died on the spot. Miraculously, where the two had died, a large tree grew, adorned with delicate orchids. Ever since, the place has been called “Cilan” (meaning “orchid perch”), and the Cilan Forest Recreation Area was named after this story.
Within the Cilan Forest Recreation Area, there are unique forest bathing trails, pebble health paths, cherry-apricot trails, and peach-plum trails. Along the way, you’ll find blooming flowers, singing birds, buzzing cicadas, and chirping insects—all combining to create a harmonious display of natural beauty.
