The Dongshan River is the fifth-largest river in Yilan County, flowing through the three townships of Luodong, Dongshan, and Wujie. Along its 24-kilometer stretch, the river has been developed into a riverside recreation area that combines education, sports, leisure, and play. The river is divided into upper, middle, and lower sections, each offering distinct recreational features. The Water Park serves as one of the most important activity hubs along the Dongshan River.
Since ancient times, the Dongshan River has been associated with legends of a green dragon and a yellow dragon guarding its shores. As a result, the riverbanks feature undulating, winding slopes paved with cobblestones, known as Dragon Slopes. The steps of these slopes are decorated with playful mosaic artworks created by children from Yilan, adding a delightful touch. Today, Yilan’s annual Dragon Boat Festival races, international rowing regattas for prestigious universities, and the International Children's Folklore and Folkgame Festival are all held at the Water Park. Additionally, there is a Magpie Bridge in the park, which adds a romantic ambiance to China’s Qixi Festival (Chinese Valentine’s Day).
