History of Civil Aviation in Chongqing

Civil aviation in Chongqing started from scratch after the founding of New China. As early as 1950, routes from Tianjin, Chengdu, Guangzhou, and Kunming to Chongqing were among the first four routes opened by New China. In 1965, the Sichuan Provincial Administration of Civil Aviation was established, overseeing four airports within Sichuan Province: Chongqing, Nanchong, Daxian, and Xichang. On January 22, 1990, Chongqing’s civil aviation moved from Baishiyi Airport to the current Jiangbei International Airport. After Chongqing became a municipality in 1997, the Civil Aviation Administration of China dissolved the Sichuan Provincial Administration and established the Chongqing Municipal Bureau of Civil Aviation, which directly operated Chongqing Airport and managed civil aviation affairs within Chongqing’s administrative region. On November 26, 2003, in line with the State Council’s reform of the civil aviation system, the Chongqing Municipal Bureau was dissolved, the Chongqing Civil Aviation Safety Supervision and Management Office was established, and the Chongqing Airport Group Co., Ltd. was formed. Chongqing Airport was officially handed over to the management of the Chongqing Municipal People’s Government. On April 18, 2004, the Chongqing Municipal People’s Government signed a transfer agreement with the Capital Airports Holding Company, and the Chongqing Airport Group officially joined the Capital Airports Holding Company as its wholly-owned subsidiary.
