The Shizuishan Ancient Tree Fossil was discovered in August 1995 in Xiaoquzigou within Dawukou, deep in the Helan Mountain area. It dates back approximately 150–200 million years, belonging to the Middle Jurassic period. This ancient tree fossil measures 18 meters in length and 1.5 meters in width. With a high degree of carbonization, it appears dark brown, and its external appearance is largely well-preserved. It is the highest-carbonized and largest ancient tree fossil ever found in China, as well as the largest, longest, and best-preserved ancient tree fossil existing in Ningxia. As an ancient plant from over 200 million years ago and belonging to the genus Taimu, it holds significant research and viewing value. On April 20, 2000, this fossil was designated as a municipal-level cultural relics protection unit. Currently, the People's Government of Dawukou District is actively taking protective measures. Organized by the Cultural and Tourism Bureau of Dawukou District, construction has begun on the Ancient Tree Fossil Museum, with a building area of 460 square meters. It is set to become a natural science education base for teenagers across the city.
As a once-in-a-century natural wonder, how can we best present this ancient tree fossil to the public, and how can we fully protect such a national treasure? The answer lies in constructing a museum of considerable scale for its preservation. Therefore, building the Ancient Tree Fossil Museum is of great significance—it is a project that benefits both the nation and its people.
