Southwest University of Political Science and Law was officially established in 1953. The university was formed during the 1952 national restructuring of colleges and departments, based on the Department of Political Science and Law of the Southwest People's Revolutionary University, and later merged with the law schools or departments of five other institutions, including Chongqing University and Sichuan University. The university’s establishment received personal attention from senior proletarian revolutionaries, including the then military and political leaders of the Southwest Bureau. General Zhou Baozhong, former commander of the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army, served as the first president.

In 1978, the university was approved by the State Council as a national key university, and it was the only one among the five politically affiliated law schools at the time to be designated as a key institution. In 1995, with the approval of the former State Education Commission, it was renamed Southwest University of Political Science and Law. The campus covers an area of 2,000 acres, consisting of the Shapingba Campus and the Yubei New Campus.

The university currently has over 1,000 faculty members and more than 20,000 students of various types. Over the past fifty years, it has trained nearly 100,000 high-level professionals for the country and is one of the universities that have contributed the most legal specialists in China.

It has developed a multidisciplinary academic system with law as the core, along with coordinated development in philosophy, economics, management, journalism, foreign languages, and other fields. The university’s Economic Law discipline has become a national key discipline—the only one in the western region—and there are six other provincial (municipal) key disciplines. The university was the first in the western region to be authorized to grant doctoral degrees in law, originally having four doctoral programs. In 2003, the university achieved a major breakthrough in academic development by obtaining qualification for first-level doctoral degree authorization in law, allowing it to enroll doctoral and master's students in ten secondary law disciplines. The university has also been approved by the State Council Postdoctoral Management Committee to establish a postdoctoral program in law...
