Qitai Desert Grassland Reserve
The Qitai Desert Grassland Reserve is situated in the northeastern part of Qitai County, Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang. It consists of Tertiary alluvial and diluvial deposits brought by mountain runoff, which have been further eroded, transported, and deposited by current water flow—especially wind—to form vast areas of sand dunes and sand ridges. To the south lies a saline alluvial plain that is flat and expansive; the northern edge has slightly risen due to the rejuvenation of the Altai Mountains, forming hilly plateaus of Tertiary sedimentary strata.
