Karnak Temple
The Karnak Temple Complex is the oldest of the temples in Thebes, constructed over a long period and divided into three sections by brick walls. The central section is the best preserved and the largest, covering approximately 30 hectares, dedicated to the sun god Amun (Amon Temple in Karnak); the left section is dedicated to the god Montu, covering 2.5 hectares; the other is dedicated to Mut, the wife of Amun and depicted as a vulture goddess, which remains unexcavated.

Surrounding the Karnak Temple are the Temple of Khonsu and other smaller temples. Each religious season’s ceremonies begin at the Karnak Temple and end at the Luxor Temple. Between them lies a one-kilometer-long stone-paved avenue lined densely with statues of sacred rams, with some golden or silver-plated stone slabs interspersed on the road surface, shimmering in the light.

The Karnak Temple is world-renowned for its massive scale—it is the largest pillared temple on Earth. The Great Hypostyle Hall of the Karnak Temple covers about 5,000 square meters, featuring 134 stone columns arranged in 16 rows. The central two rows are particularly massive, each column standing 21 meters high with a diameter of 3.57 meters, wide enough to allow 100 people to stand on top. The column capitals are shaped like open papyrus flowers. These carved and painted stone pillars have stood here for dozens of centuries.

The stone pillars inside the Karnak Temple resemble an ancient forest. With only clerestory windows formed by the height difference between the central and side roofs providing light, the illumination gradually dims after being partially blocked by beams and column capitals, creating the mysterious and oppressive atmosphere of “divinized kingship” desired by the pharaohs. These colossal forms are awe-inspiring, making the spirit feel oppressed under the weight of the material—and it is this sense of oppression that becomes the starting point of worship, the very foundation of the artistic concept of the Karnak Temple.
