There is the King of Oil Pine.

On the vast Ordos Plateau stands an ancient tree, majestic in form like a golden roc spreading its wings, its branches and leaves resembling clouds hanging from the sky. It is known as the King of China’s Oil Pines.

Its regal crown was not bestowed by people’s admiration. According to experts’ research, it has now reached the ripe old age of 908 years.

Tracing back, the tree was born in the third year of Emperor Yingzong's reign during the Northern Song Dynasty, in the year 1089 AD. It stands 25 meters tall, with a breast-height diameter of 134 centimeters and a timber volume of 13.5 cubic meters.

It is a living fossil on the Ordos Plateau. It bears witness to the fact that

a thousand years ago, this plateau was a land rich in natural resources, covered in dense forests and abundant in water and grass. This aligns completely with historical records, and even today, not far from its location, there remains over 20,000 acres of pristine secondary forest, predominantly consisting of oil pines and junipers.

Today, whether believers or non-believers, people travel from far and wide to pay homage to it. It is universally revered as the Sacred Tree. Indeed, its survival is nothing short of a miracle. Located atop a hill in the southwest of Jungar Banner, Ordos City, it has withstood the harsh natural selection of soil erosion, drought, and the greed of human plunderers. Even after more than 900 years, it shows no signs of aging.

In recent years, it seems to have regained some youthful vigor—its branches and leaves are denser, its color greener, and its treetops heavy with pinecones. It has been listed as a key cultural relic under local government protection, and special funds have been allocated to build a protective fence around it and cultivate fertile soil.
