Yiyang Olympic Park

Yiyang Olympic Park
A national 4A-level scenic spot. Located in the downtown area of Yiyang. The Yiyang Railway Station on the Shichang–Luozhan Railway is 2 kilometers from the park. It is 3 kilometers from the Changsha–Zhangjiajie Expressway, 67 kilometers from downtown Changsha, and only 45–60 minutes from Huanghua International Airport. It is one of Hunan’s “Top 100 Scenic Spots.” It is currently the only sports-themed park in China, serving as the Yiyang training base for the Chinese national badminton team. With a concentration of cultural attractions, prominent sports functions, beautiful ecological surroundings, and convenient regional facilities.

Yiyang Olympic Park was built in August 2002 by the city of Yiyang to host the 9th Hunan Provincial Games in 2002 and the 5th National City Games in 2003, following the urban master plan. Covering an area of 500 mu (approximately 33 hectares), the overall site is rectangular, stretching over 700 meters from east to west and about 360 meters from north to south. Adjacent to the Zishan Lake International Golf Course and the new government office district of Yiyang Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government, it is closely bordered by major urban roads on all four sides—east, west, south, and north—with designated entrances and exits. It is a sports-themed park that harmoniously blends nature with artificial design, modern architecture with hilly landscapes, and is hailed as the “Light of Silver City.” The park features multiple gathering plazas, landscape ornaments, decorative water and light features, outdoor fitness equipment, and leisure and amusement facilities. It serves functions such as tourism, leisure, sports and fitness, exhibitions, performances, and sports events. Since its completion, it has hosted more than ten sports competitions or large-scale performance events annually. Major national and international sporting events held here include the Chinese FA Cup, Chinese Super League Women’s Football, China League One Men’s Football, the Bayi Women’s Volleyball Team’s home games during the 2002–2008 National Women’s Volleyball League, the 2005–2007 BWF World Cup Badminton Championships, the National Women’s Badminton League, and other significant events. In 2004, the Chinese national badminton team conducted closed training and simulated matches in preparation for the Athens Olympics at the park.

  Main Facilities of the Park

The main facilities of the park consist of “one stadium and three halls,” namely the Comprehensive Gymnasium, Comprehensive Stadium, Badminton Training Hall, and Swimming and Diving Hall:

  Comprehensive Stadium (and Gymnasium)

The stadium is built along the mountain terrain, boasts an extraordinary presence, grand scale, and powerful structure. The entrance canopies on the east and west stands are made of tensile membrane structures with cantilevered designs, featuring a rugged yet lightweight form that fully reflects contemporaneity, iconic identity, and local uniqueness. The total construction area is 25,109 square meters, including a 12,199-square-meter plastic particle-surfaced track and field, a 7,140-square-meter grass football field, and a capacity to accommodate over 30,000 spectators. The gymnasium features a flying saucer-shaped silver-gray parabolic roof with a circular floor plan and structure spanning 79.2 meters in diameter, creating a modern humanistic landscape that complements the park's natural environment. The building area is 10,300 square meters, with a double-layer professional wooden sports flooring inside. It is equipped with a central air conditioning system, a 44-square-meter dual-screen electronic display system, and fixed seating for 5,000 spectators.

  Badminton Training Hall

A four-story building supported by ten front columns, with a construction area of 9,185 square meters, housing 24 badminton courts. It serves as the training venue for the Yiyang base of the Chinese national badminton team.

  Swimming Hall

With a simple and smooth design and color scheme, excellent visibility, and abundant natural lighting, the indoor swimming hall has a construction area of 9,000 square meters. It includes one standard 8-lane swimming pool, equipped with field lighting, heating, ventilation, water circulation treatment systems, as well as changing rooms, showers, and disinfection facilities. The outdoor area features one standard 8-lane swimming pool and one diving pool, with diving platforms and boards at heights of 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10 meters.
