Shaumari Wildlife Reserve
Introduction Due to excessive groundwater extraction to supply water to Amman and Irbid, the natural environment of Azraq Oasis was severely damaged, resulting in the disappearance of about 280 species. In 1975, the Jordanian government established the Shaumari Wildlife Reserve, introducing many species that were disappearing or had already disappeared from the Jordanian desert, such as gazelles, ostriches, and wild asses, gradually transitioning from captive breeding to natural habitats. Near the Shaumari Wildlife Reserve, the Azraq Wetland Reserve was also established, located in the marsh area of the oasis and serving as a resting spot for migratory birds. Transportation 10 km southeast of Azraq.
