During the Anti-Japanese War, Chongqing became China’s wartime capital. Schools from occupied areas relocated westward en masse, bringing together elites from the education and cultural sectors and hundreds of thousands of students in the mountain city. There were over 200 schools, including national, provincial, municipal, county-run, private, and mission schools. In 2005, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War and the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japan, and to inherit the valuable legacy of China’s wartime educational efforts, the National Institute of Educational Sciences, in collaboration with the Shapingba District Government of Chongqing, jointly established the Chongqing Anti-Japanese War Education Museum on the site of the former Sichuan Provincial Education College.

The Chongqing Anti-Japanese War Education Museum consists of two historical buildings from the wartime period: an exhibition hall and an office area. The exhibition hall features the “Chronicles of Education During the War of Resistance,” a display developed through research by the Hongyan Circuit. The exhibition is divided into three sections: “National Crisis and Humanitarian Catastrophe,” “National Education and the Fight for Survival,” and “Shaci Education: A Pillar of the Nation.” With a wealth of photographs, artifacts, and historical materials, the exhibition reflects the arduous struggle of national education in China during the 1930s and 1940s and the historical forces behind the vibrant development of the “Shaci Cultural Zone” in the wartime capital.
