The Ancient City of Gahai measures 435 meters in length and 436 meters in width, forming a square shape. The city walls are 12 meters wide and 4.8 meters high, built with rammed earth, with layers 6 centimeters thick. There is one gate on each of the four sides, each about 7 meters wide. The terrain inside the city is higher in the north and lower in the south, with a flat square in the northeast and higher ground in the southwest, where the foundations of original buildings remain. Artifacts unearthed include five-zhu coins from the Han Dynasty, gray pottery shards, and fragments of bronze mirrors. This site is a provincial-level key cultural relics protection unit.
The Ancient City of Gahai is one of the five ancient cities around Qinghai Lake. It was built at the same time as Triangle City in Haiyan County. This city was situated on the fertile lakeside grassland. Located in the eastern hinterland of Ganzihe Grassland, which is backed by mountains and faces water, it enjoys an open and flat terrain. Historically, it was a central area of activity for the Qiang people and falls within the scope of the Tugux culture. During the reign of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, the Xiongnu were driven northward and various Qiang tribes were pushed westward. As a result, many Qiang people from the Huangshui River basin were forced to migrate to the northern part of Qinghai Lake, leading to unprecedented prosperity and a concentration of Qiang people in this area.
