  Attraction Introduction

Wukang Road is located in Xuhui District, Shanghai. Originally named Route Ferguson after the American missionary John Calvin Ferguson, it was built in 1907 (the 33rd year of the Guangxu Emperor’s reign) by the French Concession Municipal Council. Stretching from the bustling Huaihai Middle Road in the south to the tranquil Huashan Road in the north, Wukang Road is a “Famous Historical and Cultural Street of China” that boasts 37 historic buildings. Among them are 14 buildings of outstanding historical value, making it a true “Street of Celebrities.”

Strolling along this century-old road, you’ll find lush old trees lining the street and European-style architecture scattered along the way. The landmark of Wukang Road is the Wukang Building, designed by the renowned Hungarian architect László Hudec. The building features red brick walls, bay windows on the corners, and classical triangular pediments—showcasing the charm of the French Renaissance. With its appearance resembling a giant ship ready to set sail, it’s easy to see how it got its former name, “Normandy Apartments.” Notable figures such as film artists Wu Yin, Zheng Junli, and Zhao Dan once lived here, and Kong Er, the daughter of the wealthy industrialist Kong Xiangxi, is now its largest property owner.

One of the defining features of Wukang Road is its succession of former residences of famous individuals. No. 113 is the former home of literary giant Ba Jin—a serene and cozy abode where he spent the last and longest period of his time in Shanghai. No. 393 is a British countryside-style garden villa that once belonged to Huang Xing, a revolutionary pioneer of the Republic of China; Sun Yat-sen often stayed here to discuss important matters. The Hunan Villa at the intersection of Wukang Road and Hunan Road was originally the private residence of Zhou Fohai, and after the liberation, it temporarily housed figures such as Chen Yi and Deng Xiaoping. No. 1, Lane 40 is the former residence of Tang Shaoyi—a standalone Spanish-style garden house, classic and majestic...

In addition to celebrity residences, the area also features other distinctive historic mansions. No. 390 is the office building of SAIC Motor, a small Mediterranean-style house with a red roof and white walls, distinct from the other mansions. No. 99 is the former site of Zhengguanghe, an independent mansion with a pointed roof standing tall, looking noble and mysterious amidst white high walls and green foliage—it was a filming location for "Lust, Caution."

To fully appreciate the past and present of Wukang Road, you might need a whole day. There are also plenty of cafes and restaurants where you can take a break. Wukang Terrace at No. 376 is surrounded by three historic mansions, and among the floral surroundings, a popular restaurant called Coffee Tree offers a satisfying meal—try a vegetable Panini paired with a rich cup of coffee. Farine Café at No. 378 exudes the rustic charm of the French countryside, and its croissants are hailed as “the best in Shanghai.”
