Xiwangmao Cave
Located about 15 kilometers southeast of the county town, on the cliffs halfway up the mountain in Guangxian Cave Gully of Xiwangmao Village Fort. This cave is the largest limestone karst cave in North China. Its depths are unfathomable, with initial explorations covering over 10 kilometers. The cave floor is rugged, featuring cave-within-cave structures, interconnected passages, and chambers within chambers—some spacious enough for horses to pass, others so narrow only a sheep could squeeze through. It stays warm in winter and cool in summer, making it an ideal destination for hiking, exploration, and summer retreats.
The entire cave resembles an underwater labyrinth. Some red rocks resemble candles, others are as pure white as jade, some look like rare birds and beasts, and others appear to show traces of human passage. The formations are crystal-clear and vividly colored. There are blue and green pearl-like "agates," the "snow lotus" from the icy mountains, "pillar-reaching-the-sky" stands of white jade, the classic and rustic "Roman castle," the compassionate "Guanyin Bodhisattva" of the Sage Ancestors, and folkloric scenes like the "Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea" and "Sun Wukong’s Birth." There’s also the "Cowherd and Weaver Girl" gazing at each other across a "jade sea," "Rain Beating on Mandarin Ducks," "Princess and the Beggar," and mouthwatering "grapes." The "Voluptuous Breast Stone" is mesmerizing, while "Golden Bull Emerging from the Cave," "Green Snake Rising Through Mist," "Snake Playing with Golden Toad," "Sea Turtle Emerging from Bath," "Eagle Spreading Its Wings," "Snow Weighing Down Pine," "Sea Lion Drinking the Moon," and "Pigsy Welcoming Guests" are all strikingly lifelike.
Even more fantastical are the "Nine Heavens Fairy Palace" and "Laojun’s Alchemy Kiln," which stir the desire to ascend to immortality. The "Sincerity Bell" tests one’s honesty—if your heart is pure, it rings loudly at a mere touch. The cave contains dozens of springs. Their water is sweet and free of astringency, a premium-quality spring rich in dozens of health-benefiting minerals, known to help with myocardial infarction, skin conditions, various stomach ailments, and hair loss. Legend says that ancient Medicine Kings who practiced medicine in the Dongyuan area often collected water from this cave to prepare herbal remedies, hence the spring water is also called "Medicine King Spring."
