The Xiaolangdi Water Control Project is the largest water conservancy project in China during the Eighth Five-Year Plan period, second only to the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River. The dam site is situated between Jiyuan City and Mengjin County in Henan Province. The total national investment amounted to 34.7 billion yuan. Upon completion, the backwater extends to the dam of the Sanmenxia Reservoir, forming a massive river-type reservoir that stretches 130 kilometers upstream and covers an area of 270 square kilometers. The water level of the Yellow River has risen, submerging the original scenery while also creating a new, vast, and stable water surface landscape that rivals the scenic beauty of the lakes along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, compensating for the scarcity of lakes in northern tourist attractions. The surrounding mountains are majestic, featuring steep peaks, sheer cliffs, winding paths, cascading waterfalls, ancient caves, and serene gorges. Coupled with fascinating ancient legends and the profound richness of Yellow River culture, this area is unparalleled compared to other tourist sites in North China.

On the north bank of the Yellow River in Yuanqu County, there are sites such as the Shangcheng Ruins, the Zhaili Tujiao Gully Ruins, the Hongqingguan in Gucheng Town, the Guanjiashiba Barracks, the Zhaojiapu Building, and the Tangsheng Temple. Scenic spots such as Erlang Carrying Mountains, Rabbit Play Island, Dunxi Lying Ox, Wave Lifting Horse Tomb, Five Spirits Protecting the Pearl, Tiger Carrying Immortal Ferry, Dragon Pool Lying Carp, and Horse Hoof Immortal Trail will be submerged. The main existing landscapes include Dai'mei Morning Mist, Yanghu Sunset Glow, Maxia Dragon Valley, Balihu Hutong, Snowy Peach Blossoms, and Yellow River Reflections.
