Shengwu Tower

Shengwu Tower was first built during the Jiaqing reign of the Qing Dynasty by Ye Chuhou, the 18th-generation imperial scholar of Luxi. From its foundation to completion, it spanned five dynasties — the Jiaqing, Daoguang, Xianfeng, Tongzhi, and Guangxu — taking over a hundred years in total.

The tower has a total of 24 bays, featuring exquisite stonework, wood carvings, clay sculptures, and murals throughout, all finely crafted and incredibly ornate. Among these, there are as many as 646 wood carvings, each unique, scattered across screens, cabinets, doors, windows, and stair rails. These carvings depict figures, flowers, couplets, birds and beasts, as well as poetic paintings that blend stillness and motion. Experts have hailed it as a “wood carving museum.”
