Jiulian Mountain National Nature Reserve
Jiulian Mountain National Nature Reserve is situated in Longnan County at the foot of the Nanling Mountains on the Jiangxi-Guangdong border. It gets its name from linking nine counties across Jiangxi and Guangdong provinces and having 99 peaks connected in a chain. It is the only nature reserve in our province that is part of the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Programme. Spanning 21,300 hectares, the area features dense forests and vast expanses of pristine subtropical evergreen broadleaf forest, as well as numerous ancient and relict plant species. These include the coarse-toothed tree fern and ginkgo, which date back to the age of the dinosaurs and are known as living fossils, as well as the Cretaceous relict plants such as the southern yew and the nageia. The region is characterized by undulating peaks, deep valleys, and a majestic landscape. With its rich forest scenery, cultural heritage, Hakka traditions, and harmonious coexistence between humans and nature, the reserve boasts a beautiful ecological environment and high biodiversity. It is home to 2,796 species of higher plants, 226 species of birds, and 1,404 species of forest insects. The area stands out for its lush greenery, abundant sunshine, and stunning forest landscapes. Its unique natural environment and scenic resources form a distinctive and self-contained ecosystem.

Jiulian Mountain serves as our province’s southern gateway facing Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. It is just 270 kilometers from Guangzhou and 210 kilometers from Ganzhou. National Highway 105 runs through the entire region, while the Beijing-Kowloon Railway crosses the county. With convenient and fast transportation, it takes less than half a day to travel from bustling urban areas to this peaceful and uniquely charming “Shangri-La.” The site offers significant advantages in terms of tourism timing and economic location.

Jiulian Mountain Nature Reserve boasts exceptional natural conditions and abundant resources. Its breathtaking forest scenery, serene mountain landscapes, pleasant climate throughout the seasons, and diverse flora and fauna make it an ideal destination for researchers and scholars from around the world. At the same time, it has become an increasingly popular eco-tourism destination, where visitors can immerse themselves in the magnificent “green ocean.”
