Huangcheng Grassland, known as the "vast land of a thousand miles of brocade" in the Book of the Later Han, is the Qilian Mountain Golden Pasture — one of the six most beautiful grasslands in China as rated by contemporary tourism authorities.
Just as the sky may bear no trace, yet the bird once soared. The vast grasslands renew their green year after year, and the Qilian Mountain Grasslands remain indelible in people's memories. In these boundless lands where the wind once carried the banners of wolves atop the mountains and the thunder of galloping horses below, ancient Qiang tribes left traces of their campsites. The Xiongnu Right Virtuous King lamented the loss of this lush pastureland with the eternal sigh, “Having lost my Qilian Mountains, my livestock no longer thrive.” The Greater Yuezhi played piercing eagle flutes here. The Tubo people kindled the flames of life on this land. Princess Xianhua of the Tuyuhun Kingdom set up her summer palace under the yurts to escape the summer heat in the cool highlands. Kublai Khan of the Mongols built what he believed to be an impregnable fortress here — Huangcheng... As pastures shifted and fierce storms of fire swept through, the land turned green again each spring. Only the timeless and enduring presence of the famed Haomen horses, pearly white yaks, Tibetan sheep, Mongolian sheep, and black-purple lambs continue to thrive and live in harmony with this grassland renowned through the ages.
When you step into Huangcheng Grassland, a sense of returning home washes over you. Some wish to become a red horse, standing proudly on the hillside in the westerly breeze, letting out a resonant neigh. Others dream of being a white horse under the moonlight, dancing with their shadow in the soft glow of the moon at Luanghai Lake, conversing with Tibetan mandarin ducks. Some long to be an eagle in the morning light, soaring through the clear blue sky toward the rising sun, while others imagine themselves as a meadow lark, singing heartfelt melodies in the boundless freedom of the skies...
