Wandering through the village at the bottom of the canyon feels like stepping into a paradise, making one forget the hustle and bustle of the city and the worries of life. Women washing clothes by the stream in bright ethnic costumes, elderly men with white beards sitting leisurely under ancient mulberry trees wearing flower hats, veiled elderly women strolling beneath vaulted cave dwellings that resemble time tunnels, and innocent, adorable Uyghur children chasing and playing with tourists—each sight encountered is unforgettable.
In this ancient village, uniquely distinctive residences everywhere shine with the glow of the old “loess culture.” They have inherited the traditional custom of building houses with loess for over 2,000 years. The houses are all built from loess-adobe cave dwellings, which are economical, warm in winter and cool in summer, and beautifully shaped.
