Zhangzhou Nanshan Temple
Introduction Zhangzhou Nanshan Temple is situated at the foot of Danxia Mountain on the southern bank of the Jiulong River in Zhangzhou city proper. It is one of the eight famous scenic spots in Zhangzhou and a renowned Buddhist temple with a history of over 1,200 years, well known both in China and abroad. According to the "Records of Historical Sites" in the Longxi County Annals, it was originally named "Baoku Chongfu Chan Temple" and was built during the Kaiyuan era (713–741 AD) of the Tang Dynasty by Chen Yong, the Grand Tutor to the Crown Prince. It wasn’t until the Ming Dynasty that it came to be called Nanshan Temple.
Nanshan Temple is grand in scale. Passing through five parallel gates leads to the Hall of Heavenly Kings, where a large statue of the Laughing Maitreya Buddha welcomes visitors from all directions, flanked by the tall statues of the Four Heavenly Kings (also known as the Four Diamond Kings).
