The Former Residence of Mr. Chiang Ching-kuo and Hugang are located in the northeastern suburbs of Ganzhou City, originally a stretch of loess hills. When Mr. Chiang Ching-kuo was in charge of southern Jiangxi, he founded the “Chinese Children’s Village” here in June 1943. The Children’s New Village is nestled against a mountain and near water, with buildings arranged along a 1-kilometer stretch. At its peak, the village housed over 1,000 children, many of whom were war refugees left homeless during the Anti-Japanese War. In February 1945, when Japanese forces invaded and Ganzhou fell, the Children’s New Village was closed. The “Chinese Children’s New Village” is an important historical site from the Republican era. Most of its original structures remain in Hugang today, including a memorial arch-style mountain gate, the village office, the guesthouse, a small meeting hall, the Former Residence of Mr. Chiang Ching-kuo, three classrooms, and eight dormitories. These buildings have been properly protected by the government and are now listed as cultural relic protection units of Ganzhou City.
