Wuqing Red Beans
Wuqing’s red beans are a traditional high-quality variety among Tianjin’s agricultural products and a long-standing export commodity, primarily sold to Japan, Hong Kong, Macau, and Southeast Asia.
Wuqing red beans are plump and uniform in size, with a light red glossy color, white hilum, thin skin, and high starch content. Their starch yield can reach up to 75%, and they contain 314–337 kcal per 100 grams, as well as 19–21 grams of protein, along with various amino acids essential for the human body. Red beans are a highly nutritious crop, not only used for food but also for medicinal purposes, offering heat-clearing and dampness-expelling properties, as well as benefits for the spleen. They are widely used in food preparation. One of Tianjin’s signature snacks, Erduoyan Fried Glutinous Cake, uses red bean paste as filling. Other popular red bean-based foods such as red bean porridge, red bean buns, rice cakes, zongzi (sticky rice dumplings), and ice cream are also very well received.
