Kaihua Chestnuts
Kaihua chestnuts are a traditional product belonging to the South China variety group. They are large in size with a glutinous taste and have a long cultivation history. They were once a major export commodity to Japan. In recent years, Kaihua County has introduced Zhujishan Kuili and Maobanhong chestnut varieties in line with the requirements of high-quality seedlings and large-scale cultivation bases, and has established over 50,000 mu of chestnut bases.
Biennial-bearing chestnuts are a newly introduced premium variety from Kaihua County. They are characterized by flowering twice a year and bearing two crops annually, demonstrating notable precocity, high yield, and stability compared to other varieties, hence called “double-season chestnuts.” This variety bears fruit in the same year of planting, with the first crop maturing extremely early and the second at an especially favorable market time. Currently, 6,500 mu have been planted, and the variety has been introduced in seven provinces and municipalities with excellent performance. Research on biennial-bearing chestnuts has been listed as a key scientific research project funded by the National Forestry Department during the Ninth Five-Year Plan period. With the advancement of comprehensive agricultural development and household economy, chestnuts are set to become one of Kaihua’s pillar industries in the 21st century.
