Guangyang Lake Straw Weaving
The straw and willow weaving craft of Guangyang Lake is made from thatch, wheat straw, and willow twigs. It originated in the late Qing Dynasty and is recorded in the town chronicles. Initially, it was mainly for self-use, prioritizing practicality over aesthetics. Historically, Guangyang Lake has been a corn-growing region, and the byproducts of grain—thatch and wheat straw—along with abundant willow resources, were processed by the locals using their unique weaving techniques. Most straw and willow weaving products from Guangyang are everyday household items, such as straw shoes, straw mats, straw bags, and willow baskets.
There are numerous methods of straw and willow weaving in Guangyang Lake, including flat weaving, cross weaving, cone stacking, twining, coiling, binding, and stringing. The craft products are not only highly practical but also strongly artistic. However, with the improvement in living standards, the decline in the use of straw-woven products has greatly limited the development of this handicraft.
