Zhongyang Town is known as the “Hometown of Freshwater Shrimp Farming” and serves as a demonstration base for freshwater shrimp farming standards set by the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Marine Fisheries and the Jiangsu Provincial Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision.

The town has 150,000 mu of water area in Hongze Lake, featuring a dense network of rivers, clear water, and abundant aquatic plants, making it highly suitable for specialized aquaculture.

Currently, the area dedicated to freshwater shrimp farming in the town has reached over 20,000 mu. In ponds where shrimp are the primary species, the average annual yield is 80 kg per mu, with an average profit of 2,300 yuan per mu. In mixed-species ponds, the average annual shrimp yield is 10 kg per mu, adding an average profit of 400 yuan per mu. As early as 2008, the “Zhongyang” brand freshwater shrimp and river crabs registered by the town were certified by the Ministry of Agriculture as pollution-free aquatic product production areas. Among them, the “Zhongyang” brand freshwater shrimp was awarded the title of “Jiangsu Provincial Famous-Brand Product,” and the products are well received in cities such as Shanghai, Suzhou, and Hangzhou.
