According to *The Inner Biography of Emperor Wu of Han*, in April of the sixth year of Yuanshou, the Queen Mother of the West met with Emperor Wu of Han and presented him with four flat peaches. After eating them, the emperor felt refreshed and invigorated, with a lingering fragrance in his teeth, and wished to plant them in the imperial garden. The Queen Mother of the West informed him: "The land of Central China is barren; flat peaches will not grow here." Thereafter, Emperor Wu, enchanted by the delicious taste of the flat peaches, sent his minister Dongfang Shuo on three long and arduous journeys westward to Kunlun to steal the peaches. Emperor Wu also carefully preserved the peach pits he had eaten, passing them down all the way to the Ming Dynasty. According to the *Wanwei Yu Bian* from the Ming Dynasty: "During the Hongwu era of the Yuan dynasty, the inner treasury of the Yuan dynasty stored flat peach pits that were five inches long and four and seven-tenths inches wide, inscribed with fourteen characters: 'The Queen Mother of the West bestowed peaches upon Emperor Wu in the Chenghua Hall.' In 1934, Yang Yitong (from Songjiang), a farmer in Sandao Village (now Heping Village, Lüxiang), located more than four li northwest of the former Gancun Town, planted over 1,000 peach trees—including flat peaches—on 30 acres of land at Sanhuanxi, later known as the 'Heping Peach Garden.' In May 2001, the industrialization project of flat peaches was officially launched.
